Fair Trade City

In May 2011, the city council decided that Jena would strive to earn the title “Fairtrade City.” The city wanted to take a stand in support of fair global trade, decent working and living conditions in the Global South, and against exploitative child labor. The title is awarded by Fairtrade Deutschland e. V. to cities that are committed to fair trade. After meeting all the criteria, Jena became the 100th “Fairtrade City.”

The ceremonial presentation of the title took place on October 20, 2012, at Jena City Hall, featuring information booths, a supporting program, and organic, fair-trade catering. Young people from Jena’s sister city, San Marcos in Nicaragua, along with many volunteers and supporters who had dedicated themselves to helping Jena become a “Fairtrade City,” organized the ceremony in the City Hall foyer.

The title must be renewed every two years, and Jena has succeeded in doing so every time so far. On October 20, 2022, Jena will have been a Fairtrade City for 10 years. In 2026, it was time again. The title, valid for only two years, had to be defended once more. This was achieved through various projects, and Jena is now permitted to hold the title for another two years. The next title renewal is scheduled for 2028.

Fairtrade City Criteria

  3. Local retail stores, florists, cafés, and restaurants must offer at least two different fair trade products.
