Fairtrade city
In May 2011, the city council decided that Jena should strive for the title of "Fairtrade City". The city wanted to set an example for fair world trade, for humane working and living conditions in the countries of the South and against exploitative child labor. The title is awarded by Fairtrade Deutschland e. V. to cities that are committed to fair trade. After fulfilling all the criteria, Jena was awarded the title of 100th "Fairtrade City".
The ceremonial presentation of the title took place on 20.10.2012 in Jena's town hall with information stands, a supporting program and organic fair trade catering. Young people from Jena's twin city San Marcos in Nicaragua and many helpers and fellow campaigners, who had supported and accompanied the path to becoming a "Fairtrade City" with great commitment, organized the ceremony in the town hall hall.
The title must be renewed every two years and Jena has always succeeded in doing so. On 20.10.2022, Jena has already been a Fairtrade city for 10 years. In 2024 it was time again. The title, which is only valid for two years, had to be defended again. This was achieved as a result of various projects and Jena can hold the title for another two years. The next title renewal is due in 2026.
